Marvel’s upcoming Undead Iron Fist miniseries by Jason Loo and Fran Galán marks more than just a new adventure for Danny Rand. It continues a legacy count that now quietly approaches a major milestone. If Marvel follows the same legacy numbering track it began in 2017, then Undead Iron Fist will bring the character to Legacy Issue #96, placing Iron Fist #100 firmly within reach.

This matters not only for collectors or continuity enthusiasts, but for the larger recognition of Iron Fist’s place in Marvel history.

The Legacy Numbering So Far

Legacy numbering for Iron Fist resumed with Iron Fist (2017) #73, written by Ed Brisson and illustrated by Mike Perkins. The run concluded at issue #80, with Brisson and artist Damian Couceiro tying the last three issues to Marvel’s Damnation event. From there, Marvel continued to publish more solo Iron Fist titles that appear to extend the legacy count, even if the numbers weren’t printed on the covers.

With the four-issue Undead Iron Fist miniseries about to push the legacy count to #96, the long-awaited milestone Iron Fist #100 is now clearly within sight.

After the 2017 series ended at issue #80, here’s how Iron Fist’s succeeding printed solo stories align with legacy numbering:

  • Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon (2022): #81–86
  • Iron Fist (2023, starring Lin Lie): #87–91
  • Iron Fist: 50th Anniversary Special (2024): #92
  • Undead Iron Fist (2025, projected 4 issues): #93–96

This progression places Undead Iron Fist at a pivotal moment in the count, just four issues away from Legacy #100.

Why Iron Fist #100 Matters

Reaching 100 issues isn’t just a number for the Living Weapon and his fans. It shows that Iron Fist has endured and earned a place of honor in Marvel’s annals. For a Bronze Age character whose solo runs have often been cut short, Legacy #100 would be a long-overdue acknowledgment of his lasting impact.

Danny Rand remains the defining Iron Fist, the original hero who introduced K’un-Lun’s legacy to the Marvel Universe and the torchbearer for Marvel’s super-powered martial arts characters. Over the decades, he’s grown from a 1970s martial arts icon into an Immortal Weapon and, more recently, a mentor guiding the next generation of Iron Fists. A milestone issue would give Marvel the perfect opportunity to reflect on Danny Rand’s journey and reunite him with key allies such as Colleen Wing and Misty Knight, who began as supporting characters in Iron Fist but have since become major players in the Marvel Universe, and Luke Cage, his longtime best friend. It could also serve as a bridge for new readers discovering the Iron Fist legacy through Lin Lie and Pei.

Making Up for A Missed Opportunity

At first glance, it may seem like Marvel missed the ideal timing last year. After all, Danny Rand’s 50th anniversary arrived in 2024, and a #100 legacy celebration would’ve been the icing on the cake. However, without a solo series last year, whether mini or ongoing, the 100th issue never became a reality.

However, the Undead Iron Fist series gives Marvel a second chance. Once the miniseries is counted, it leaves the door wide open for a true centennial release, which would honor Iron Fist’s evolution across different eras, from Marvel Premiere and Power Man and Iron Fist to The Immortal Iron Fist and beyond.

Marvel has taken a quiet but steady approach to Iron Fist’s legacy numbering. While progress has been slow, it has been consistent (a solo series every 3-5 years since the mid-90s), making Legacy #100 not just possible, but a milestone that now feels inevitable.

The graphic below shows the most probable legacy numbering that Marvel will follow based on how they’ve handled Iron Fist’s solo titles since 2017, leading up to Undead Iron Fist.

Digital-Only Titles: Why Aren’t They Counted?

Back in 2023, when I suggested that Marvel had missed a monumental opportunity to publish 2023’s Iron Fist #5 as issue #100, I added the digital-first releases (among other issues) as part of the legacy count. After digging deeper into how Marvel calculates legacy numbering across their other titles, I was able to apply that same logic to Iron Fist, starting from issue #81, and revised the count with much more clarity.

One area of ambiguity lies in Marvel’s treatment of digital-first titles. While they feature Iron Fist or legacy bearers in a lead role, Marvel has never formally included these in legacy numbering.

Here are the Iron Fist solo titles* that were released digitally before they were collected in TPB format:

  • The Immortal Iron Fists (2017) #1-6 by Kaare Andrews and Afu Chan
  • Iron Fist: Phantom Limb (2020) #1-3 by Clay McLeod Chapman and Guillermo Sanna

*NOTE: While “Pei: Wayward Warrior” (Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic #51–56, 2023) feels like it should count, it doesn’t. The series ran under a different title and was primarily released as a webcomic, unlike the others, which saw print.

While these digital stories expand the mythology, based on how Marvel has handled legacy counts in print, they are almost certainly excluded from official numbering.

Fan-Based “What If” Numbering

While Marvel seems to limit legacy numbering to print-first solo titles, there are two interesting “what-if” scenarios that I thought of exploring:

1. With Power Man and Iron Fist (2011), the Digital-Only Series, and A.X.E.: Iron Fist #1 (2023) Included

Counting the 2011 Power Man and Iron Fist series, The Immortal Iron Fists and Phantom Limb, and A.X.E.: Iron Fist #1 (2023) included, the total would be closer to Legacy #116 before Undead Iron Fist even starts. It’s a more inclusive model that accounts for the full breadth of Iron Fist storytelling.

Power Man and Iron Fist (2011) is an interesting case because it doesn’t feature Luke Cage as Power Man. Instead, we have Victor Alvarez, who took on the mantle during the Shadowland event, teaming up with Danny Rand. Rather than adding this series to Iron Fist’s legacy numbering (a logical decision, wouldn’t you agree?), Marvel chose to exclude it entirely, not counting it toward anyone’s legacy tally.

A.X.E.: Iron Fist #1 (2023) is a one-shot tied to a larger event. While Marvel typically doesn’t include these types of event-related single issues in legacy counts, this particular issue might deserve an exception since it directly continues the story that introduced Lin Lie as the new Iron Fist.

2. With Power Man and Iron Fist (1978–1986) Included

From issue #50 to #125, Danny Rand was a full co-lead alongside Luke Cage. Consider, too, that the series was supposedly a merging of two titles that were going to be canceled, and you’d certainly have to think about giving Iron Fist his just due in legacy numbering.

Including all 76 issues from the Power Man and Iron Fist era would push the count well past Legacy #200. However, this would blur the line between solo and team books—something Marvel rarely does when calculating legacy numbers. While it’s a fun idea for fans, historians, and completists to explore, Marvel is unlikely to revise its current mapping just for the sake of technical accuracy. Their legacy counts tend to favor simplicity over completeness.

What You Can Do

If you believe Iron Fist #100 deserves the same kind of attention Marvel gives to its flagship characters, now’s the time to act. Fans, creators, and bloggers should raise awareness and remind Marvel that we’re watching.
