If heroes are only as great as the villains they face, then Iron Fist deserves to be named among the greatest. Or at least close to it. Iron Fist’s rogues gallery might not be as famous as that of Spider-Man’s or Batman’s, but these villains are no less dangerous or compelling.

My list of what is essentially the Living Weapon’s greatest foes is the result of a tweet from two Twitter users–Iron Fist E Books (@ironfist_ebooks) and Dave, the Comic Book Herald (@ComicBookHerald). Dave posted former Marvel writer Mark Gruenwald’s memo from his final issue as Captain America’s scribe.

In it, Gruenwald suggested that “a solo hero needs at least twelve” good foes to make him a great hero. In fact, the esteemed writer began his establishment of Cap’s 12 foes with the idea that “a hero is only as great as the foes he triumphs over.”

Iron Fist E Books then retweeted the post with a caption, saying that Iron Fist isn’t “lacking in interesting antagonists, he’s lacking in recurring enemies” and proceeded with a thread outlining 12 of Danny’s foes.

Now here I am trying to put my own spin on it. This was not an easy task but I had to get it done, mostly because I had to know for myself that Iron Fist has that many villains that would be interesting enough to push him to greater heights. Thankfully, after much time and rigorous research, I came up with the necessary number of fiendish foils for our kung-fu master.
Here they are, the 12 villains who should be recurring foils for Iron Fist:

12. Fera

Facing your mother’s killer is complicated enough, but this is ridiculous.

Believe it or not, Fera is one of the K’un-Lunian wolves who attacked and killed Heather Rand in Marvel Premiere #15, leaving young Danny an orphan at nine years old. Fera took on the form of a she-wolf in the first Power Man and Iron Fist series (issues 97-100) through the power of evil sorcerer Master Khan (more on this guy later).

This backstory alone gives her a legitimate case to be among Iron Fist’s 12 best rogues but there’s more.

Iron Fist barely held his own against Fera as her feral nature (no pun intended) and beastly abilities combined with her martial arts skills made her a formidable foe even against one who bested Shou-Lao the Undying. She eventually freed herself from Khan’s control and left after being aided by Power Man and Iron Fist. She has since appeared in other titles and teamed up with other villains, too.

12. Warhawk

A war veteran with PTSD, Mitchell Tanner a.k.a Warhawk is the Punisher without a moral compass…and then some! He also possesses steel-hard skin and super strength after being given a variation of the Super Soldier Serum.

Warhawk faced off against Iron Fist who was still relatively fresh off his initial return from K’un-Lun. He had a serious form of delusion when he battled Danny Rand and Colleen Wing in Marvel Premiere #22. He appeared to drown at the end of the issue after a chi-powered punch from the Living Weapon sent him flying out to sea. Iron Fist tried to rescue him but he refused.
He would battle the X-Men later on and make Danny’s life miserable again in the pages of Power Man and Iron Fist.

A creation of legendary writer Chris Claremont, Warhawk deserves more recognition as an Iron Fist villain by appearing more regularly as a legitimate threat to the Living Weapon.

11. Crane Mother

Crane Mother is the ruler of Ku’n-Zi, one of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven and she has a bone to pick with Orson Randall. Orson accidentally killed the Immortal Weapon of Ku’n-Zi, Crane Mother’s son. The fact that she only gives birth to only one Crane Champion every 300 years makes her son’s death even more painful, fueling her anger toward K’un-Lun’s champion for decades.

To Danny’s chagrin, Crane Mother resurrected his mortal enemy Davos the Steel Serpent to hunt down Randall. She also made Davos her city’s champion to fight for them in the Tournament of the Heavenly Cities and renamed him as the Steel Phoenix. Moreover, Davos succeeded in taking revenge for Crane Mother by killing Orson in battle.
This blood feud between K’un-Lun and K’un-Zi should be explored further in future stories with Crane Mother at the center of the conflict. With Orson’s death, her rage may turn to Danny who now wears the mask of her most hated foe.

9. Chaka Khan, the Crime Lord

Nope, he’s not that Chaka Khan. We need a better name for this character but until then, he should be one of Iron Fist’s top 12 villains. The crime lord and leader of the martial arts gang the Golden Tigers, Chaka (Robert Hao) sought to take over the local rackets in New York City after the arrest of Maggia boss, Ruffio Costa.

However, Iron Fist had other plans and Chaka went to prison.

Later, another Chaka crossed paths with Power Man and Iron Fist after seizing control of the Golden Tigers in Hao’s absence. A seemingly remorseful Hao was seen in prison, giving the Heroes for Hire a mystery to solve aside from having a villain to defeat. After taking down Power Man, the new Chaka went head-to-head with Iron Fist but was clearly outmatched. It was revealed eventually that the man behind the mask was a judo instructor named Thomas Arn who took on the Chaka identity.

Given a deeper backstory with a more intensive martial arts background, Chaka, along with his Golden Tigers, could become a major force for Iron Fist to contend with.

8. The Ninja

The Ninja is one of Iron Fist’s earliest foes, first appearing in Marvel Premiere #18 when he murdered Harold Meachum whom Danny was intent on killing at the beginning until his sense of honor kicked in. Joy Meachum, Harold’s daughter, thought Iron Fist was her father’s killer and sought to take revenge.

Colleen Wing, Danny’s first friend upon returning, was pestered by the Ninja as well. Over the course of many months (maybe even years?) the Ninja had been taking possession of her father’s body. If not for Iron Fist, who knows what would have become of Professor Lee Wing.

A ghostly martial artist, the Ninja is among a handful of fighters who can go toe-to-toe with the Living Weapon. He was discovered to be working for Master Khan during the Power Man and Iron Fist series and could be brought back to make life miserable for both Danny and Colleen once more.

7. Chiantang

Chiantang is a shape-shifting dragon who was responsible for cursing a lowly fisherman of K’un-Lun and transforming him into Shou-Lao the Undying. As a mortal, Shou-Lao had married the daughter of the Dragon King and shamed her. This enraged Chiantang, the brother of the Dragon King, and sought his vengeance by sealing Shou-Lao’s fate. Or so it seemed.

By defeating Shou-Lao, however, Iron Fist unwittingly released him from his curse and this did not sit well with Chiantang who demolished K’un-Lun in return. With the aid of Lei-Kung the Thunderer and Power Man, Iron Fist defeated Chiantang in his dragon form.

The vengeful dragon, however, would cross paths with Black Panther and used Iron Fist to fight against him. To make this happen, Chiantang had to restore Danny’s powers first after Junzo Muto took them away (see no. 6 on this list). Brainwashed into Chiantang’s service, Iron Fist nearly killed T’Challa in the ensuing battle.

Ultimately, Black Panther broke him free from Chiantang’s influence and brought Danny back to his senses.

6. Junzo Muto

A teenager without conscience, Junzo Muto took leadership of the Hand and stole the power of the iron fist from Danny Rand. As if these two deeds weren’t impressive enough, he managed to bring K’un-Lun to Earth, too, and cause havoc for members of both the Avengers and the X-Men. Did I mention that he made life difficult for the New Warriors as well?

Needless to say, Junzo Muto isn’t your ordinary, run-of-the-mill 15-year-old kid.

Danny’s heartbeat was tied to K’un-Lun, and as Junzo had planned, it manifested itself on earth by appearing over Tokyo. If that wasn’t enough to put Junzo on Iron Fist’s hit list, he also ripped Misty Knight’s bionic arm off of her and relished telling that story to her kung-fu-fighting boyfriend!

To fix the mess that Junzo had done, Danny had to be stabbed in the heart by Yu-Ti to restore K’un-Lun back to its dimension. A disinterested Junzo then left in haste with the iron fist and has never been seen since, leaving a dead and powerless Danny Rand in Misty’s arms. Danny was brought back to life eventually but his powers were gone (for now).

A rematch is in order between Iron Fist and Junzo Muto, and it only takes one writer to rekindle this rivalry in the future.

5. The Ch’i-Lin

The Ch’i-Lin is a mystical creature that has claimed the life of almost every Iron Fist in order to satisfy its hunger by consuming the egg of Shou-Lao the Undying. Virtually every Iron Fist had died at 33, the age by which the Ch’i-Lin seeks out K’un-Lun’s champion. Orson Randall and Danny Rand are two of the very few who had escaped its clutches.

When it sought out Danny, the Ch’i-Lin’s host was Zhou Cheng who infiltrated Rand Enterprises to reach his prey. Though he had some help from Luke Cage, Colleen Wing, and Misty Knight as well as the Immortal Weapons, Danny found a way to defeat Zhou Cheng/the Ch’i-Lin himself by dumbing down his chi and fighting the beast without the power of the iron fist.

It’s possible that the Ch’i-Lin will come back to chase after the Iron Fist after suffering a humiliating defeat. With an appetite directed solely towards Shou-Lao’s egg and Iron Fist as the bearer of the dragon’s power, the Ch’i-Lin deserves a spot among the Living Weapon’s rogues.

4. The H’ylthri

For the longest time, the people of K’un-Lun and the H’ylthri have been at war with each other. The original inhabitants of K’un-Lun, these alien plant-like creatures had abducted Iron Fist and impersonated him while feeding off of his life force along with hundreds of K’un-Lun’s residents. Danny eventually freed himself and laid waste to the H’ylthri guarding the pods in which the K’un-Lunians were encased.

The H’ylthri were also responsible for killing his sister Miranda, who was resurrected by them when they found a reason to use her for their evil plans.

These mischievous deeds and more make the H’ylthri one of Iron Fist’s (and the whole of K’un-Lun’s) most dangerous foes. Battling these plant people on a regular basis will likely require Danny to fight alongside his friends to gain the upper hand, and anytime we get a chance to see Misty, Colleen, and Luke guest-star in an Iron Fist title is always a treat.

3. Sabretooth

Originally known as Sabre-Tooth, Creed is the most famous of Iron Fist’s villains. He debuted in Iron Fist (1975) #14 and was the creation of comic book legends Chris Claremont and John Byrne.
Iron Fist and Sabretooth crossed paths in Canada as Colleen Wing recognized the villain for hire.

Since then, Sabretooth has continued to defy the Living Weapon, even after Iron Fist teamed up with Power Man while Creed worked alongside the Constrictor.

Though he has since become Wolverine’s chief nemesis, Sabretooth recently helped Iron Fist in a search for the Book of Iron Fists after it went missing during Ed Brisson and Mike Perkins’ Iron Fist (2017) run. But with Creed seemingly going back to being a full-time villain again, he should be Iron Fist’s most lethal and vicious foe on a regular basis once more.

2. Master Khan

Few villains have made life as miserable for Iron Fist as Master Khan has. Though not initially an Iron Fist villain, Khan soon became a recurring foe for the Living Weapon after it was established that he had connections to K’un-Lun.

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Master Khan first appeared in Strange Tales #77 in 1960 but was a rarely used character until Chris Claremont made him a pesky foe for Iron Fist. Khan once kidnapped Colleen Wing and sent Iron Fist on a months-long quest to find his best friend.

Not only that, Khan has sent multiple adversaries against Iron Fist and some of them are actually on this list. Among these villains are the Ninja, the Monstroid, Angar the Screamer, Scimitar, Constrictor, Sabretooth, the H’ylthri, and the Super Skrull.

Master Khan was behind the plot to replace Danny with a H’ylthri doppelganger which led to the supposed “death” of Iron Fist (Power Man and Iron Fist #125) until Namor rescued him from the plant race’s clutches.

What more does a villain have to do to be on Iron Fist’s recurring rogues gallery than what Master Khan has done so far?

1. Steel Serpent

Easily Iron Fist’s greatest villain, Davos the Steel Serpent is the yin to Danny’s yang. He was redeemed by Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction in The Immortal Iron Fist (2006) but he returned to his treacherous and evil ways in Iron Fist: The Living Weapon (2014) by Kaare Andrews.

The Steel Serpent first appeared in Iron Fist (1975) #1 and was also created by Claremont and Byrne like Sabretooth. He has always sought to steal the power of the iron fist and he had succeeded on more than one occasion.

Wendell Rand, Danny’s father, was supposed to become the next Iron Fist after defeating Davos in the tournament to determine K’un-Lun’s champion. Davos, Wendell’s best friend at the time, became angry and jealous believing that he was the rightful bearer of the iron fist legacy, and this led to him brashly challenging Shou-Lao the Undying.

The great dragon, however, saw him as unworthy and it left him with a serpent scar rather than the dragon brand that all other Iron Fists bore. Wendell left the mystical city like his mentor Orson Randall did before him, only to seek to return a decade later. It was there that Wendell met his fate when he was betrayed by his business partner, Harold Meachum.

Since then, the wayward son of Lei-Kung the Thunderer has made Wendell’s son’s life miserable time and time again, making him one of the few villains who has been a constant thorn in our hero’s side. He was also responsible for Orson’s death and it happened in front of Danny, just as his father had died right before his eyes decades earlier.

For someone to hold a grudge that deep that he would hold it against his rival’s innocent son is just pure evil. The Steel Serpent is a painful reminder to Danny Rand of his father’s difficult past, making him the “worthiest” villain to be in Iron Fist’s rogues gallery.
