Iron Fist is back with a vengeance!

As first reported by Nerdist, the Living Weapon will have a brand new solo title starting January 2021. Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon, a six-part limited series, will be handled by the capable hands of longtime G.I. Joe writer Larry Hama and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles artist David Wachter. The covers will be illustrated by former New Avengers and Green Lantern artist Billy Tan.

Iron Fist last appeared in a solo title two years ago on Iron Fist: Phantom Limb (2018), a three-part series under Marvel’s Digital Original line. It was later released in printed form as a trade paperback containing all three issues.

Hama is no stranger to Iron Fist. His first Marvel work was on Marvel Premiere #16, Iron Fist’s second appearance, succeeding the character’s co-creator Gil Kane as artist. Though he only illustrated four issues, he had a huge impact on the character’s mythology.

He was the co-creator of some of Iron Fist’s most enduring supporting cast including Shou-Lao the Undying, Lei-Kung the Thunderer, and Colleen Wing.

Wachter has sharpened his pencils on drawing martial arts movements after coming from a lengthy run on IDW Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Following the announcement from Nerdist, Wachter shared the news on his personal Facebook page and on his fan page with the following caption:

“Ok, so, lots going on today. I’ve been holding onto this for a while, especially since Covid put a four month hold on everything, but here finally it is: I’m doing the art for a new mini-series, IRON FIST: Heart of the Dragon! This is my first Marvel gig, and it has been a ton of fun to work on. I love the character, it’s an immense honor to work with the legendary Larry Hama, and I’m getting to draw a ton of awesome stuff.”

Tan illustrated Iron Fist in The New Avengers (2005) series with writer Brian Michael Bendis when the Living Weapon became part of the rogue Avengers team during Marvel’s Civil War.
